| Calendar of Events | | FOOD & WINE EVENTS | Sept 13-17, 2011 | Food Festival: The Birmingham Public Library presents the Eat Drink Read Write Festival, five days of free programs bringing food, culinary arts, and literature to the table in a stimulating format. The festival opens on Tuesday, September 13 at the Central Library with a discussion led by Barry Estabrook, an award-winning journalist and author of Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit. James Beard Award winner and Alabama native, Chef Frank Stitt will discuss tomato varieties and offer samples of tomato-based dishes. There will be a variety of free events in various locations throughout the festival. The outdoor community arts and music party featuring Big Sam's Funky Nation, UAB's Marching Blazers Drumline, the UAB Steel Drum Band, an open-mic showcase of local talent, a community art project, a craft beer tasting from Free the Hops and Birmingham Budweiser, and food for sale from The Cantina on Wheels. Sloss Fright Furnace: Featuring two trails, the notorious trail in the haunted furnace and a new woods trail, Sloss Fright Furnace is a horrifying and thrilling experience.
